Music Therapy and Mental Health

Music therapy is the use of musical instruments and the sounds they make to promote change and recovery.

Music can communicate where words fail, making it an ideal medium for exploring experiences and feelings, which may initially be too hard to verbalise.

Music Therapy is an effective alternative to counselling and psychotherapy, especially when people are finding verbal communication difficult or inadequate, or having problems relating to others.

In a music therapy session, a wide selection of good quality and accessible instruments invite self-expression and facilitate interaction. The therapist improvises music with the clients in a way that supports, encourages and contains the client's music/sounds.

Some of the feedback we have received about our sessions:

“You feel more relaxed and confident at the end of sessions'”

“Very heartening and refreshing/rejuvenating”

“ good, safe environment to release stress and focus, for a moment on my enjoyment .”

“….order from chaos”

“Music provides the opportunity for emotional release through physical movement – anger, sadness, joy. Emotions are transformed into both sounds and melody. ”

“I’m learning how to listen better and that gives me confidence.”

"Group music therapy is a bonding experience…. Individuals can express feelings to each other without using words."
